During my informative concert at Bridgepark on Sunday, Jan. 15, we were treated to a lovely snowfall. Cozy by the fire, I met artist Jeanne Heddington, who sketched me. She even counted the correct number of strings and discs. Jeanne is 93. During the Worlds Fair she sketched over 1500 portraits of the visitors on site. She was the Boeing Artist for many years and has not slowed down, as you can see! Thanks, Richard Pogue, for having me again!!

In December of 1989 or 1990, I saw a tiny car with a huge harp in the back swoosh past on Fauntleroy Way. My dear Gail was to come home from the hospital the following week, and in one stroke you solved the problem of how to welcome her home and what to get her for Christmas. Though she was medicated and still under the thumb of that which stole the brightest mind and sweetest soul I've ever known, your music made an impression on her; many years later and 2000 miles away, that was one of the only Christmas memories she could recall. With Craig at the candle table lit in memory of loved ones. A gentleman stood and spoke about how today was Pearl Harbor Day, which resulted in his going to war. In San Francisco he met "the most beautiful thing I ever saw in this world." Upon his return from the war, they wed and stayed married for 66 years. We gave him an ovation for his moving tribute to his wife. A very rich and warm evening!

And I was so delighted that it worked out for you to play at the reception as well. It was my fantasy to have beautiful music through dinner and conversation before the dancing, loud music and partying got started. It was just so lovely in every way.

The year long planning culminated in an event that went by in a flash but the lovely melodies that filled the chapel as my daughter walked down the aisle, the mood you helped to create at the reception and the sweetness of your smiling face will always be some of the memories I will treasure the most. I am truly grateful for the part that you played.

Words failed express the shock and dispair at this very sad "celebration of a life cut short." Only 30 year of experience could have held me together to play my heart out to this family and community. A young man died tragically at age 38, leaving a loving family and young son. As we awaited the priest from Argentina to arrive, I felt I had the congregation balanced in my hands as I tried to shape each note to address the depths of feeling in the room. I hoped my music could momentarily suspend reality and allow something of beauty to wash over them and bring whatever peace was possible in the moment. The gift of the harp...to heal and suspend tragedy for even a few moments. This was a very sad affair and I wish with all my heart for this family to find solace and eventually beauty and light in the life of this wonderful young man in their time of grieving.

An amusing speaker, his minor anecdotes to me are best. He spoke spending thousands of marketing dollars to promote a show, only to find that by sending a calendar appointment to the right person in the same firm, for free, from his iPhone, he got far better results. Christine and Allan shared heart felt vows at the most beautiful Catholic Church in all of Seattle. Everyone was moved by the glory off the Mass and the caring and love expressed by the wedding party and family. Thanks again, Christine and Allan. I've been waiting especially for Mother's Day to record this wonderful Northumberland lullaby "Bonnie at Morn." The lyrics are the univeral ranting of a mother disappointed in her bairns. The chorus goes:

Cozy in the tent at Evergreen Washelli, the family of this stalward Norwegian Navy Nurse and grandparent extraordinaire shared loving memories of an incredible woman. Having a Scandinavian grandmother, myself, I felt like a part of this family. Her grandson described how Grandma would keeping him in line by telling him she would "butter his ears if he wasn't careful..." I could imagine her waving her finger at him as as my grandmother waved her finger at me. I love being part of these special moments in people's lives when sharing memories of what truly counts brings us together as a community. It's a privilege to be play harp in these settings!! What a wonderful family you are and how gracious and beautiful was the life of Marjorie Loomis Brandon!

Following the blood bath of the Civil War, in 1870, Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the Battle Hymn of the Republic) issued a passionate appeal to all mother's to rise up and prevent their sons from going to war evermore. It was called the "Mother's Day Proclamation." It's yearly observance was to seal the conviction of all mother's around the world to promote peace by not allowing their sons to engage in warfare. In this 150th year following our disunion...or Civil War, I played "Oshokan Farewell," the theme from the famous Civil War documentary by Ken Burns.
